If you would have told me a few months ago I would be reviewing a book titled The Cigarette Book: The History and Culture of Smoking
, disbelief is a mild description of my reaction.
As a strong anti-smoking advocate (in an extended family of smokers), I was interested to see what would be in a book with this title.
I also was ready to read a book that was NOT about personal finance for a change. Well, it’s a book even someone like me can read.
Style
The Cigarette Book by Chris Harrald and Fletcher Watkins is an book full of entertaining tidbits about smoking in an encyclopedia format. You can pick it up at any time and select any page and start reading something interesting!
The short stories are ordered alphabetically and no more than a page in length.
Recommendation
This book would be a great gift for ex or current smokers as well as fact nerds like myself. Speaking of which, did you know that cocaine cigarettes were marketed to women in the 1920s? Fascinating!
I immediately thought of it as a bathroom book (for those that also refer to it as a reading room). The book is a light-hearted look at history and smoking.

This book would be a perfect gift for a friend of mine!
And speaking of the history of smoking – I have a memory as a small child of waiting in the doctor’s office and lots of people smoking cigarettes in the waiting room! (yes, that was MANY years ago.) And one man was blowing cigarette rings and I was chasing them to stick my fingers in the rings!
This sounds like an interesting book. my sister and me would want to read this. thanks!
