It’s that time of year again and no I didn’t mean Valentines’ Day (although that is important). Americans are faced with the tax deadline of April 18th. The question is how do you get your taxes prepared?
For years, we used an accountant until I convinced my husband that we could do the same thing for a lot less using tax software. We selected H&R Block’s software (formerly named TaxCut) and have used it for several years now.
I find it easy to use as the interview process asks for all the information needed to prepare our return. We never had any problems submitting our returns.

We used an accountant referred to us by a former co-worker of mine for the past 3 years. I wouldn’t claim that he was particularly good, nor bad, just standard. We’ve found it easier to use an accountant because we are legally married in California as a gay couple. However, thanks to the the DOMA law at the federal level we must file separately at the federal level then “mock up” a joint federal return to get the California number and then file jointly with California. When we added last year my husband’s business expenses and stock sales and employee stock options the complications multiplied. However, our accountant has now retired and we are shopping for new accountants and they are EXPENSIVE!!! So, I’m thinking we may go the do-it-yourself route this year.
I always think that it’s great to get it done professionally once, especially when it’s complicated and then do it yourself later. A friend has been paying $350 for years to get her taxes done. Now she pays under $50 for both and she has seen no difference.

Last year, I had an accountant do it. I had won a free tax preparation – otherwise, I usually do it myself.

We prepared our tax return the old fashioned way. I’m still amazed that we’re together.
